Brand heritage
1800 is a tequila brand built around a single number. Introduced in the 1970s by the same family business behind Jose Cuervo, it takes its name from the year the brand identifies with the first ageing of tequila in oak. A distinctive pyramid-shaped bottle, a premium position and steady growth across North America turned a relatively young label into one of the most recognisable tequilas on shelves today, with a range that now stretches well beyond its original expressions.

Most tequila brands are named after families, places or founders. 1800 is named after a date. According to the brand, the year 1800 marks when tequila was first aged in oak barrels, a step that helped move the spirit from a rustic local drink toward the rested and aged styles now common across the category.
Precise early records of tequila production are thin, so the date is best read as the brand’s own origin reference rather than a settled historical fact. Either way, the name makes a clear statement: 1800 wanted to be associated with tradition and ageing from the moment it launched.
1800 was introduced in 1975 by the family company that owns Jose Cuervo, and it remains part of that group today. Rather than extend the Cuervo label upward, the family created a separate identity with its own name, look and market position.
That decision gave the business two distinct voices: one rooted in centuries of family heritage and broad popularity, the other presented as a more premium, design-led tequila for drinkers trading up.
The 1800 bottle is tall, tapered and topped with a pyramid-shaped stopper, a form the brand connects to the pyramids of ancient Mexico. On a crowded shelf it reads instantly, even from a distance, which made it a powerful asset as the brand competed for attention in bars and stores.
The design also reinforced the premium message. Heavy glass and a sculpted silhouette signalled that this was meant to be displayed and poured with some ceremony, not just mixed.
Over time 1800 expanded from its core unaged and rested tequilas into older, filtered and flavoured expressions, along with special-edition releases. The growth tracked the wider rise of tequila in the United States and Canada, where the brand became one of the category’s steady sellers.
