Brand profile
Hennessy was founded in Cognac in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irishman who had served in the French army and recognized the export potential of the region’s eaux-de-vie. The house grew through family stewardship, a long relationship with the Fillioux family of master blenders and an unusually international outlook. Its history also intersects with several classifications now familiar across cognac, while the Bras Armé emblem connects the brand to its founder. Hennessy’s modern cultural presence rests on that combination of trade, continuity and recognizable identity.

01
Richard Hennessy was born in Ireland in 1724 and later served in the army of France’s Louis XV. In 1765 he established a trading house in Cognac, applying commercial instinct to a region already known for distilled wine. His position on the Charente River connected the house to ports and export routes, making overseas trade part of the business from its earliest decades.
The river matters to the Hennessy story because the company did not grow as an inward-looking local producer. Barrels moved toward customers in Ireland, Britain, the Americas and beyond. The founder’s outsider perspective and the town’s access to maritime trade helped establish an international outlook unusually early in the house’s history.
02
The Hennessy family guided the commercial house while the Fillioux family became central to the selection and blending of its eaux-de-vie. Their working relationship began in the early nineteenth century and continued across generations, separating two responsibilities while keeping both closely connected.
That continuity is important in a business built around reserves that mature over long periods. A master blender makes decisions whose full value may only become clear to successors. The Hennessy–Fillioux relationship therefore represents more than a colourful family anecdote; it is an operating structure designed to carry judgment and memory forward.
03
In 1856, the Bras Armé—an arm holding an axe—became the house symbol. Drawn from the Hennessy family coat of arms, it refers to Richard Hennessy’s military service before he entered the cognac trade. The emblem gives the brand a concise visual link to a biography that crossed Ireland and France.
Unlike a decoration invented only for a bottle, the symbol carries a specific family reference. Its endurance has helped Hennessy present continuity through changing packages, markets and advertising styles without turning the founder’s story into the only thing the house represents.
04
Several Hennessy milestones became part of cognac’s broader vocabulary. A commission for the future King George IV in 1817 is associated with the initials V.S.O.P. In 1865, Maurice Hennessy introduced a star-based way to distinguish qualities, with the three-star designation later known as V.S. Five years later, he created an extra-old blend for family and friends that gave rise to X.O.
These classifications now extend far beyond one producer, which makes their Hennessy connection historically significant. On this page they belong to the story of the house and its portfolio architecture; the exact characteristics of an individual Hennessy bottle remain on that bottle’s product page.
05
Hennessy shipped to the United States by the end of the eighteenth century and expanded across Europe, Asia and other markets during the nineteenth. By that century’s end, its cognac was travelling to five continents. Global distribution was therefore not a late branding exercise but a continuation of the export model Richard Hennessy had established.
In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the name also developed a documented presence in music, art and fashion, particularly through collaborations and references in popular culture. That visibility did not replace the house’s Cognac roots; it gave a centuries-old export brand new cultural settings in which to be recognized.
