One bottle. Premium spirits are bought to be poured slowly, not to cover a room, and pairing one good bottle with ordinary mixers is a better night than three mid-shelf bottles.
What to pick
XO cognac and aged añejo are the two that get bought as objects as much as drinks. Single malt suits the person who will actually sit with it. Premium vodka is the safest of the three if you do not know the recipient's taste.
