375 mL vs 750 mL: Which Bottle Size Makes More Sense?

Several spirits on our shelves come in two sizes, and the decision is usually made in about three seconds at checkout. It deserves slightly more thought than that, because the right size depends less on budget than on how many people are drinking and what happens to the rest of the bottle.

Drinks per bottle

SizeStandard 1.5 oz drinksParty-sized poursSuits
375 mLAbout 8About 6Two or three people, one evening
750 mLAbout 16About 12A small party, or a bottle you keep

The bigger bottle is almost always cheaper per drink

Across our range the pattern is consistent: Crown Royal Deluxe is $60 at 375 mL and $80 at 750 mL, and Smirnoff No. 21 follows the same shape. You are paying a third more for twice the liquid.

On pure value the 750 mL wins every time. That only matters if the extra half gets drunk rather than sitting at the back of a cupboard.

When the half bottle is the right call

  • Two people, one evening, and you do not want a full bottle in the house afterwards.
  • Trying a style you have never bought — a smaller outlay makes an experiment easier.
  • A cottage or a trip where you are carrying everything and space is short.
  • Buying two different spirits instead of one, so a small group has a choice.

When to go straight to 750 mL

Any gathering of four or more. Eight drinks disappears in an hour across four people, and the second bottle is an interruption to the evening.

Also go large for anything that keeps. Spirits do not spoil, so a 750 mL of Bacardí Superior White Rum or Jameson Irish Whiskey is never really wasted — it just becomes next month's purchase you already made.

What about beer and coolers?

The same logic runs through the packs. A 6 pack is the two-people-one-evening choice; a 12 pack is the party size and costs less per can.

For a party, one 12 pack beats two 6 packs on price and on the number of times you have to open the fridge.

Common questions

How many shots are in a 750 mL bottle?

About 16 at 1.5 oz each. Heavier home pours bring that down to around 12.

Does an opened bottle of spirits go off?

Not meaningfully. A sealed-again bottle of vodka, whiskey or rum will be fine for years, though a nearly empty bottle slowly loses aroma.

Is it cheaper to buy two 375 mL bottles than one 750 mL?

No. Two half bottles cost more than one full bottle of the same spirit — buy the small size for the reason, not the price.
