Brand profile
Casamigos began as a private tequila project shared by George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman before becoming a commercial brand in 2013. Its name means “house of friends,” a concise expression of the social origin story that shaped its public identity. The founders positioned Casamigos as an approachable premium tequila rather than a heritage house, and rapid growth attracted Diageo, which acquired the business in 2017. The result is a distinctly modern brand story built around friendship, lifestyle and international scale.

01
The Casamigos story began with friends rather than a corporate portfolio plan. George Clooney and Rande Gerber were spending time at neighbouring homes in Mexico with property developer Mike Meldman. They pursued a tequila they would be happy to share in their own houses, working through repeated samples before settling on the character they wanted.
That private-use beginning became the brand’s defining narrative. It presented Casamigos as something developed through personal preference and hospitality, not simply designed after a market survey. The name—loosely, “house of friends”—made that idea visible on every bottle.
02
Casamigos entered the commercial market in 2013 with Clooney, Gerber and Meldman identified as its founders. Celebrity recognition gave the launch immediate attention, but the brand’s identity was broader than one famous name. Its relaxed visual language and friendship-led story offered a less formal version of premium tequila culture.
That positioning arrived as interest in premium tequila was accelerating in the United States. Casamigos made the category feel socially accessible while preserving signals of quality and Mexican production, helping the label move quickly from a founders’ project to a widely distributed business.
03
By 2017, Casamigos had recorded rapid US growth. Diageo announced an agreement to acquire the company in June of that year and completed the transaction in August. The deal valued the brand at up to US$1 billion, combining an initial payment with a possible performance-based amount.
The acquisition was not an ending to the founders’ story: Diageo said they would remain involved while its distribution network supported wider expansion. Casamigos consequently became a useful example of how quickly a focused modern spirits label could move from a personal concept to international ownership.
04
Many historic spirits brands build identity from coats of arms, old distilleries or generations of family production. Casamigos took a different route. Its central asset was an easily understood social idea: a bottle made to be shared among friends. The hand-drawn look of the label and the founders’ informal account of its creation reinforced that tone.
As the portfolio expanded, that idea provided continuity. Different expressions could sit under one name without requiring the brand to pretend to centuries of history. Casamigos’ relevance comes precisely from being a twenty-first-century tequila story rather than an imitation of an older house.
