One difference that explains everything
Vodka is distilled to taste of as little as possible. Gin is vodka's base spirit put through botanicals — juniper first, then citrus peel, coriander, angelica and whatever else the distiller uses.
So the question is never which is better. It is whether you want the drink to carry a flavour of its own before you add anything.

Mixers and garnish
Gin rewards garnish: lime, cucumber, grapefruit peel or a few peppercorns all pull out different botanicals from the same bottle. A 750 mL bottle makes about 16 drinks, so budget 1.5 to 2 litres of tonic per bottle.
Vodka is about the mixer. Soda and lime, cranberry, ginger beer and juice all work, and a cheap mixer shows more here than it would with gin.

Buying one bottle for a mixed group
Vodka is the safer single bottle — people who dislike gin are common, people who dislike vodka in a mixed drink are rare. If you are buying two, one of each covers far more of the room than two vodkas would.

Yes, but the drink changes. A vodka negroni or vodka and tonic is a lighter, plainer version of the original rather than a direct swap.
