How Much Beer to Order for a Party

Beer is the easiest drink to order and the easiest to get wrong, because the units you buy it in do not match the way people drink it. This guide turns guest count and party length into packs, and shows where pack size actually saves money.

The per-guest rule

Plan roughly one drink per guest per hour, then adjust for the crowd. A quiet dinner runs below that; a birthday where beer is the only drink runs above it.

Ten guests over four hours is about 40 beers if beer is all anyone is drinking. Twenty guests over four hours is about 80. Fifty guests over five hours is well over 250, which is where pack size stops being a detail.

Pack sizes, in practice

12-pack3–4 guestsSmall gatherings and mixed drink orders

Where the money is

Price per bottle almost always drops as the pack gets bigger, and every product card on the beer aisle shows the pack size and the price together, so you can check the maths before you order rather than guessing.

The practical trick for a mixed group: buy the bulk of the order as one 24 of a familiar domestic lager, then add a single 6-pack of something imported. You get variety for a few dollars instead of splitting the whole order into expensive small packs.

Don't forget the cold chain

Beer is delivered from local stock, not from a chilled warehouse, so plan on fridge or ice-bucket time before guests arrive. A bucket and 10 lb of ice chills a 24 far faster than a packed fridge will.

Common questions

How many beers are in a case?

In this catalogue, a 24 is twenty-four bottles or cans, a 12-pack is twelve and a 6-pack is six. The exact count and format are listed on each product page.

Is it cheaper to buy a 24 than four 6-packs?

Per bottle it usually is, but rather than take our word for it, compare the listed prices on the beer aisle — both the pack size and the price are shown on every card.

How much beer for 50 guests?

At one drink per guest per hour over five hours, roughly 250 servings. If beer is around two-thirds of the drinks, that is about 170 beers, or seven 24s.
